General Requirements

Applicants for the Master Program in Biomedical Engineering in Lübeck must have a university or university of applied sciences degree (e.g. Bachelor's Degree) in one of the following areas:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Medical Technology
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics
  • Information Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechatronics
  • Physics
  • Process Engineering
  • Materials Technology

Additionally, applicants with a master degree in a comparable field may also apply for a position in this program. Students’ eligibility is evaluated by a committee who look at application grades and length of study as well as the relevant technical degree. Since all bachelor degrees are not equivalent worldwide, the decision to admit applicants will be made on a case-by-case basis.

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants who hold a degree in medical sciences (MD) or a degree in business sciences (economics) without a second technical degree do not fulfill the requirements to apply to this master's program.

Students must have a bachelor's or diploma degree with a grade of 2.5 or better (German grading system).

Proof of English proficiency

If you are not a native English speaker you must have an internationally accepted language test certificate such as the TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate. A score of at least 80 points (internet based TOEFL) or 550 points (paper based TOEFL) or a comparable result in another international test is required.

If you are unable to complete these English proficiency exams the following exceptions may apply:

  • English was the primary language of instruction for your school education
  • At least six months of working or studying in an English speaking country
  • English was the official language of your previous Bachelor or Master studies

You must support these exceptions with adequate and officially certified documents.

Knowledge of German

It is to your advantage to be able to speak German. Because all lectures and exams take place in English, you can attend the Master Program without any German knowledge. Many people in Germany speak English, however it is always good to have a basic knowledge of the language spoken in the country in which you are living. We advise students to learn German because it is necessary for cultural integration in your everyday life in Lübeck and also for your job search.
